By Maria Aleta Nieva-Nishimori, ABS-CBNnews | updated as of 03/19/2014 3:05 PM MANILA - The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) on Tuesday launched a video that aims to help aspiring OFWs be smarter in choosing jobs abroad and avoid falling victim to illegal recruitment. Titled: Matalino Ako! Hindi Ako Magpapaloko! the video was a result of the second year of partnership between POEA and online recruitment company, JobStreet. We will continue our collaborative projects that are geared towards protecting and safeguarding Filipinos against false and deceitful information and fraudulent job advertisements through timely advisory and credible advertisements, said POEA Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac. The video tells the story of Rommel Ignacio, a mechanic who shared what he went through from applying for the job, to getting hired, and then to the processing of documents. It also highlights some the factors that an aspiring OFW and his family go through in considering an employment abroad. Cacdac said the video will be played in Pre-Employment Orientation Seminars (PEOS) nationwide as a way to raise awareness on the legal way of working abroad. Yung PEOS, ito yung mga seminars na ibinibigay namin para matulungan ang ating mga kababayan makapagpasya kung sila nga ay maga-abroad o hindi sa pamamagitan ng pagturo sa kanila ng kaparaanan kung paano magdesisyon, Cacdac said. He added that PEOS also helps provide information to the public about the realities of overseas jobs. Mahalaga na nalalaman ang realidad nang hindi nagkakagulatan, he said, noting that in the case of domestic workers, not all are informed of what to expect and the labor rules of their host countries. Ang layunin ng PEOS is bigyan sila ng sapat na kaalaman kaya ang video maraming pagtatanong ang ating bida. Yung pagtatanong na yun would lead our people para malaman pa ang impormasyong kailangan nilang alamin lalot-lalo na sa kanilang recruiters, he said. He likewise stressed that it is also the obligation of recruiters, and not just the government, to provide the people they recruit and deploy with the right information. PEOS is currently done face-to-face daily, training to close to 100,000 overseas candidates yearly. With the help of the video, POEA and JobStreet aim to reach more OFW intenders by making it available online-- allowing more access anytime, anywhere. JobStreets Marketing Director Yolanda Buyco advised those who want to work abroad for the first time to search and apply for jobs online which is easy and hassle-free. Wala kayong kailangang gastusin na pamasahe o pampa-xerox o pam-print ng inyong resume. All you have to do is sign up with JobStreet, build your resume online, look for your jobs that matches your qualifications, and then apply easily, Buyco said. She assured that all jobs on JobStreet are being offered by POEA-licensed agencies. Buyco said it pays to check out all the information about an agency as well as the job that one is applying for. Be prepared for overseas employment. Hindi biro ang abroad. Napakahirap ng buhay sa abroad lalo na kung malalayo sa pamilya, she said.
