Before going to bed, a few words relevant to the Senate story. Many years, many years, ago when I was just a kid, my father, then both a lawyer and MLA agreed to defend a man named Tanner , a resident of Colchester County, on a murder charge. Most people in the area believed strongly that he was guilty, and every political or community meeting that the old man went to. folks asked him how he could defend this terrible man. Father always replied--everyone is entitled to a proper defense and that in Canada we are innocent until proven guilty. Even after the guy was aquitted,most folks still thought he was guilty. Father didnt. In the provincial election, not too long after that (1953), Fathers barely won reelection by 180 votes. Most political folks, Father included, that this defense of Mr. Tanner was one of the main causes for the narrow margin, even though the party was growing in other ridings. But Father always believed in fairness and justice innocent until proven guilty,. and he never regretted taking that case. Same with the Senate situation. To paraphrase Senator Duffy: Vladimir Putin would be proud of whats happening.
