Before graduation. I was told I didnt have enough credits to graduate. I attended portland community college in pipe fitting fabrication. (I had met a guy when I was 15 who worked at Trojan. He was a pipe fitter. And thought Id like to pursue that career.) After graduation I wasnt sure what my direction would be. Started working at rose valley pallet. Cut the tip of finger off. So much for my lumber job. I lived on the Columbia multnomah county line. Drawing unemployment and workers comp. I wasnt sure where I was going. One day a navy recruiter cam to my hose. And offered to buy me lunch and have me take a test just for curiosity. (At the time I thought only losers went in the military) I took the test ad they told me I qualified for anything the navy offered. I chose to be a pipe fitter. I took a year off. Then went into the military. I got stationed in Connecticut. Repairing nuclear submarines. Was very interesting. In Connecticut I met a preacher and he shared the love of Jesus with me. I became a Christian. The navy wanted me to go to long beach California and continue to repair submarines. I wanted to see the world. So I called Washington, D.C. So they sent me to Bremerton Washington on the uss Sacramento. Two weeks after arriving to the ship. We headed on a west pack. I went half way around the world. At 20 I had my own division of 30 guys. We were involved in the Iranian hostage rescue. The navy wanted me to stay in and go to officer training. And 4 years to Oregon state. To get my engineering degree. I turned it down. I got out of the military in 1981. Ronald Reagan became president. Because I could of rein listed and didnt I was not eligible for unemployment. Even after I served my country. At the time in Oregon jobs were scarce because canada was selling lumber cheaper. So I had an opportunity to move to Atlanta. I moved to Atlanta and attended a Christian walk. At that walk the same preacher from Connecticut was there. I could truly say God was my lord and savior! Some time after, I took a 32 week deciple bible study. Every time I opened the bible God would talk to me to have faith. I was considering starting my own company. So I took the leap of faith. I had four children at the time car payments and mortgage I only had two thousand dollars. I quit my job and I started covenant mechanical contractors inc. Im in my 16th year. Right now Im writing this on the plane headed to New Orleans for a convention. Remember you only live once! God is awesome.
