[Behind The Scenes] Ive been working on 2 new solo guitar - TopicsExpress

[Behind The Scenes] Ive been working on 2 new solo guitar arrangements recently and am in the midst of practicing them now. I just tweaked the 2nd arrangement and its this song by R. Azmi. The more I listen to the classic songs, song that my dad listened to as a young man - it makes me appreciate more and more the beauty and diverse influences that make up the gamut of Malay music. While practicing this piece, my dad told me about how this song was part of the Joget Moden repertoire where people danced in a more modern style in the 50s. The process of learning this song included me figuring out the songform, learning the chord progression, memorizing the melody and then deciding whether to keep the original key of Gb Major. As I learned the piece on guitar, it was quite a challenge to figure out how to play it in this unusual key (for guitar). My main influence outside of the actual piece weirdly enough was Bill Frisell, a jazz guitarist that has been exploring the American songbook from the jazz classics to even earlier music. I watched a few of his solo guitar videos and was reminded how much I loved implied harmonies and sparser playing. This led me to embrace a more impressionistic take on the piece and less of a more standard fingerstyle guitar lets play every single part approach. Looking forward to debut this arrangement at Pesta Raya this weekend. Now, time to practice! =) youtube/watch?v=0RN5PzrDNR4
