Behind the Lens || Risk vs. Reward As a travel photographer I am fortunate that I constantly get to travel to far away destinations, usually working on personal projects that I am passionate about or in the very least with companies and brands I respect. The downside to this approach however is that I often find myself on new ground, working in a location for the first time...or maybe the 4th time. Regardless I rarely get the opportunity to truly get to know a location as well as a local would because the week or month I have in a spot will always pale in comparison to the knowledge that someone who has these areas in their backyard has developed over the years. When capturing a sunset north of Kona on The Big Island of Hawaii the other night i realized the tide was coming in fast and strong on the lava cliffs I was shooting from. Every time I set up, a big wave would get a little too close for comfort so I would change locations and try again. After 25 minutes of this, I decided to make a judgment call. Since I didnt know the tides of this area and the idea of taking a big wave didnt sound particularly fun given how sharp the lava I was standing on was, I decided to shift my focus and approach and instead found some gorgeous tide pools that were reflecting the beautiful sunset I was witnessing. In the end I had to weigh the risks of shooting in an unfamiliar area with an unfamiliar tide with the reward of getting the shot from those cliffs. To me...it just wasnt worth it and I went with my gut instead. Being happy with the results was icing in the cake! Have you ever shot with your gut feeling in mind?
