#BehindTheMusic Song - Plastic Cups featuring Chaundon and Joe Scudda Beat - J Dilla So...I assume most of you have heard The Season by Nas over one of J Dillas beats from Donuts. Well...I did a little song some years ago with my brethren called Plastic Cups over the same beat. Here is the story of how that came about. DJ Jaycee (V-103 in Atlanta, Formerly Ludacris DJ, and Aphiliates) was about to make a mixtape and wanted something from the crew. Obviously being a Detroit guy, he was a fan of Dilla and wanted to use one of the instrumentals from Donuts for his mixtape. He picked out the Gobstopper instrumental and picked Chaundon, Joe Scudda, and me for the joint. Thing is...I didnt really want to do it. I am a Dilla fan. Been a Dilla fan. Met Dilla once at the first Rock The Bells with him and Madlib performing as Jaylib. Dilla was a fan of Little Brother. Since I never got the chance to work with him while he was alive I didnt feel all too comfortable rocking over one of his joints. At the time I didnt know his brother, Illa. I didnt know Ma Dukes to seek out permission. I also didnt want to tell Jaycee no. Yeah, I was in a pickle. I talked it over with the fellas and Big Dho and decided to proceed. We knocked the joint out rather quickly and I was sure to mention Dillas name in the record to pay homage. Little did I know that people would really take to the song like they did. We decided to shoot a video in NY during that summer and somebody came through with the fly Dilla art that we displayed at the end of the video. So while yall giving Nas his shine for reaching back and rocking a Dilla joint, remember who was rocked that joint before it was cool. RIP James Yancey.
