Behold what the new NBA President, Augustine Oyarekhua Alegeh, SAN has as his key agenda for the NBA under his administration... 1. Amendment Proposal of the Constitution. The President stated despite the recent amendment of the NBA Constitution, there is a further need to amend the Constitution to meet present realities and take advantage of modern technological developments. E-voting. The President stated that considering the cost of NBA National elections, the risk, dangers and inconveniences encountered by NBA members the delegate election system of the NBA needs to be reviewed and that the E-voting through the NBA website should be introduced and this would require a constitutional amendment. 2. Other Amendments. He stated the other provisions need to be reviewed and fine tuned as a result of all the disputes that arise and proper amendments would be provided as required. He further stated that the review and amendments of the Constitution to introduce the e-voting and other changes will be given priority and dealt with speeding before the 2016 elections so as to allow the various NBA branches the opportunity to experiment e-voting and be conversant with it before election. A committee was immediately was set up to take necessary steps to propose and file amendments. 3. National Executive Council meetings. He stated that NEC meeting should be more effective and dedicated totally to deliberations of NBA matters. He said pre-registered observers will now be allowed to attend NEC meetings as observers. 4. Welfare of NBA members. He made it clear that the welfare of members will be given high priority during this administration. He stated that all lawyers who have been verified in the NBA database shall be issued NBA identification cards free of charge which would be a chip and pin card. He said the card would also function as a payment card for ATM, POS and Online transactions. It further stated that presentation of Card would entitle the lawyer to variety of discount and other packages negotiated by NBA. 5. NBA Insurance Scheme. He said the NBA has received offers from various insurance companies in respect of NBA Insurance Scheme which would provide insurance cover for all members who have paid their Bar practicing fees as at when due. He said members are automatically entitled to the insurance cover upon payment of their practicing fee. 6. Bar Practicing Fees. The President stated that he shall propose to NEC a 10% reduction across board in respect of Bar Practicing fees for all lawyers excluding Senior Advocates. He further stated that a proposal will be made to NEC, that the share of Branches from BPFs be increased from 10% to 20% and the additional 10% to branches would be applied to set up a Lawyers Welfare Trust Fund to all NBA Branches. 7. 2015 Annual General Meeting Registration fee. He announced that the fees for the 2015 Annual General Conference shall be a forty (40%) percent reduction of the fees for the 2014 Annual General Meeting. The Fees are as follows: * 1-5 years - N5, 000 * 6-10 years - N15, 000 * 11-14 years - N25, 000 * 15-20 years - N35, 000 * 20 years and Above - N50, 000 * SANs/AGs/Benchers - N100, 000 * Judges - N75, 000 * Magistrates – N50, 000 * Governors and Political Appointees - N250, 000 8. NBA Partner Discount. Hotels and Airlines. He noted that negotiations are been made with hotels and airlines for discount on prices upon presentation of NBA identification cards. 9. Loans. He stated that discussions are going on with financial institutions to provide specialized financial products to lawyers in the form of Consumer loans for cars, generators, e.t.c. as well as for commercial and residential mortgage loans at reasonable interest rates and with repayment moratorium. However, he stated that NBA will only encourage the institution to offer these loans but will not stand as a guarantor for any loan facility. 10. Appointment into NBA Positions. He announced that appointments into NBA positions would be improved to reflect equity, fairness and balance. He said a committee would be set up to make recommendations to the National Officers for appointment. He further stated that all branch chairmen would submit a list of members recommended into various positions. He said this administration wants to be run in such a way where all branches will have representatives in different committees. So help him and his team God!
