Beijing at the time I went was late spring and the weather was ok but things got rapidly hot as summer came early. Id been through 43-degree of heat once and my shoulders + upper arms were angry red hot. In 1 of the nights in the 北京工人体育馆青年旅社 (youth hostel), an electricity outage occurred at about 9pm. Everyone was groaning in the heat. Everything went back in 1 hour, and I went for supper with the hostel employees. I helped them a lot to translate questions-answers to Caucasian travellers and they wanted to thank me by bringing me to their fave supper spot. We crossed an overhead bridge, saw a few grubby old woman + a kid begging for money. They told me never to give any cash or wed be swamped by the whole lot. Then we crossed a wide road to an alley where a make-shift stall was selling Xinjiang BBQ meat in bamboo sticks. Id some beer + boiled edamames + many sticks of well spiced meat. Awesome supper. By the time we went back, it was about 1am. Ya, I said about not going out late, but Id made friends with them + theyre young kids like me, some even younger and they all look very decent. I heard that its not easy to get a job in this youth hostel with many tests + interviews to go, so I guess they were more decent people? All in all, I was lucky. :)
