Being Different: A Blessing or a Curse? Have you ever found yourself in a position where for some reason, no matter what you do, you just cannot fit in? When your interests or perspective are so different from other peoples, there seems to exist no converging point? What is this vague quality that distinguishes some people? They are no better or worse than others, just different... How can you endure a lifetime of always standing out, of being constantly reminded that you are at best eccentric, at worst bizarre or out-of-place-and-time? You might say its good to be different. Youre special, unique, beautiful! You might as well be a genius, why would you want to be anything else? But you know what? Everybody loves a dead genius, they really do. But the people that are currently considered the greatest geniuses of all times, during their lifetime were often considered strange, crazy and weird. The average person could not grasp their vision. People say Im crazy...dreaming my life away John Lennon writes in Watching the Wheels. I do not know whether being different is a sign of genius or not, what I do know is that some people feel extremely isolated throughout their lives. This emotional isolation (there may be people around but they still feel alone) may lead to major psychological problems, feelings of futility, as if life is not worth living. To all these people who feel isolated and different, remember this: life gets the toughest just before it gives you a breakthrough to a greater understanding, so stay around because you are not alone. Like-minded people exist, it may take some time, but eventually youll find people who understand. Meanwhille, rest on the inspiration of others, surround yourself with great music, literature, works of art or create yours to find out whether or not you really are a genius!
