* Being a Hater * I get it that certain people are secular only on the surface. They are secular because it suits their needs. These people are also called sickular and this is a pretty good label to ascribe to these people too. However, my objection is on clubbing the Muslims along with the sickular people. These are two very different groups. The Muslims do not enjoy any favours from these sickulars at all. In fact, its the sickulars who reap the benefits by exploiting the Muslims for votes and other gains, both tangible and intangible. And whats with the people who hate these sickulars but end up hating on the Muslims instead? Personally, I may or may not believe the Hijab to be a desirable piece of clothing. But I am an atheist. To a Muslim, a Hijab and/ or a Burqa may be very important, and just because I do not hold the same kind of respect for the Hijab or the Burqa does not mean I will go about insulting these pieces of clothing. (On a different note, its funny to think that the same people who harp about our vibrant democracy dont even respect the clothing choices of other people.) Example time ^_^ - Barkha Dutt of NDTV is said to be a true sickular of the highest order. Yes, she is a public figure, so haters can hate on her. Thats pretty okay for a democracy with free speech. But hey, whats up with calling her Burqa Dutt? Mocking a public figure for what you believe to be genuine reasons is one thing, distorting that public figures name and ridiculing a religious/ cultural symbol that the Muslims hold dear is another. It does not show that you were intelligent enough to create a wordplay out of two phonetically slightly similar words. It just shows that deep in your heart you loathe either a particular religion or the religious/ cultural symbolism that the people of that religion wear. Either way (whether you hate the religion or the symbols), it means that you are an impartial, unbiased observer no more. Emotions and biases do an excellent job of clouding our ability to reason. And yes, these have claimed more victims than you can ever imagine. Are you a victim too? Be wise. Think. ~ © Abhijit Chakraborty 2014
