Being a taxpayer in a country does not and should not ever mean - TopicsExpress

Being a taxpayer in a country does not and should not ever mean you get an ENTITLEMENT to vote. There are many countries where citizenship is a requirement to be able to enrol and vote. Just because NZ lets non citizens vote, does not mean its right. It appears there are NZers who migrate to another country and think that country should adopt NZs laws, which is just crazy - if NZs laws are that good - why all the problems, why leave? NZers who are taxpayers in the USA and Canada cannot vote if they have not got citizenship of the country. And even if they are permanent residents in either country, they are still not eligible to enrol and vote, even though a US citizen or Canadian citizen can in Nz if PR, so after 2 yrs residence in Nz they can vote. Why not the outcry to Canada? the US? The many other countries where citizenship is a requirement. These countries have different laws to Nz including eligibility to vote. In my opinion, NZ have it very wrong and the citizenship requirement to vote is right. Id support Nz changing their laws, not the other way around.
