Being aware that there is a deep ideological divide within the - TopicsExpress

Being aware that there is a deep ideological divide within the general UCSB population that involves itself in student govt. and politics, and another divide within spaces and various communities, I cannot help but feel self-conscious when I hold friendly or civil relations with people and student officials who are disliked by people whose ideologies I might identify with, some who are my dear friends. My thoughts are: it is not fair, especially to newer members of spaces to feel obligated to dislike the same people that you do. Yes, we can express our opinions, and educate others on what certain people have done to perpetuate systems of injustice. But I think the whole point of fostering critical thinking and encouraging people to question the powers that be, also comes with giving people the space to decide on their methodology and their opinions. Also, I cannot help but feel wrong to wholeheartedly dislike someone just because members of my political alignment have a history of disliking them. This is largely due to the fact that either I have not met or held any meaningful interactions with many of these people. At the end of the day, I know what side I take and what I stand for, but I dont have to channel my energy towards hating certain individuals to do so.
