Belief systems: Systems psychology - Systems thinking As Whites begin learning about the realities of racism, they enter the stage of Disintegration when they experience the cognitive dissonance between how they perceive the state of race relations and the reality of racial discrimination. Discovering the reality of racial injustice and perceiving the unearned benefits and privileges accredited to Whites can create significant inner conflict for the White person. This process is painful; disorientation and confusion result for many Whites upon realizing their own complicity and ignorance about racism. It can be very painful for White persons to become suddenly aware of the daily offenses of microaggression they commit against persons of color. It can feel disorienting to learn that much of the wealth White persons currently possess can be traced back to slavery or the exploitation of persons of color.
