Believers dont live right out of fear, duty, obligation, responsibility or condemnation. The perfect love of God has cast out fear. There is no condemnation in Christ. We are not made righteous by what we do, but by faith. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.” (Romans 4:5-8 NKJV) We are the ungodly who are justified by faith. We know that God shall not impute sin to us. Our lives and work are now motivated by love and gratitude and empowered by the Spirit. We dont work for righteousness or blessing or to escape judgment, we have His righteousness imputed to us. The Spirit in us is producing the fruit of love. Fruit? Go out in your back yard and yell at your fruit tree! Tell it it will go to Hell if it doesnt start bearing fruit! Threaten it with judgment! It just wont work, because fruit happens naturally, because the branch is connected to the right tree! The old covenant, external, conforming, fear, bondage, frustration, disappointment and condemnation of rule-keeping cannot produce righteousness, peace or joy. The new covenant is the Spirit of God making us new, making us righteous and effortlessly producing in us the fruit of the Spirit - LOVE.
