Belmar Secures Emergency Equipment & Vehicles at No Cost Today, Mayor Matthew J. Doherty announced Belmar’s successful efforts to obtain vital emergency management equipment and vehicles through the United States Department of Defense’s Law Enforcement Support Office (LESO) and the United States General Services Administration (GSA). These federal programs make available to municipal law enforcement agencies, decommissioned military equipment and vehicles returning from service abroad. These decommissioned vehicles and equipment are made available at no cost to the Borough of Belmar. Mayor Matthew J. Doherty said, “Belmar will never again be short of the vehicles and equipment needed to respond to emergencies like Hurricane Sandy. Every piece of equipment we scrambled to find during Sandy is now the property of the Borough. There was no cost to purchase these vehicles and equipment, showing again our commitment to responsibly manage tax payer dollars and prepare for the next emergency.” Belmar obtained the vehicles and equipment, valued at over $1,000,000, to ensure that in the event of an emergency, first responders will have the appropriate equipment to respond to all manner of emergency events, including storm surges. The acquisition of these vehicles will allow the Borough fleet to be parked on high ground, safe from the debilitating effects of flooding. Belmar displayed several of the vehicles at the September 18, 2013 meeting of Mayor & Council and will hold a “Touch a Truck” Event on Saturday, October 26th from 11am – 3pm on Ocean Avenue between 17th & 20th Avenues. Through the efforts of the Belmar Police Department and the Belmar Department of Public Works, Belmar is now the owner of the following emergency management equipment and vehicles: 4 - Deuce & A Halfs - Five Ton High Water Trucks Able to drive through 7 feet of flood water 4 - Hummers Police, Water Rescue & DPW can utilize in emergencies and flooding events. 1 - Unimog Versatile all-terrain vehicle equipped with a bucket loader and back hoe. 2 - Bull Dozers Vital for beach dune management and emergency debris response. 1 - Trailer Bed To facilitate the movement of equipment in a state of emergency. 10 – 60 KW Generators Each generator has the capacity to supply power to a typical sized fire house or public building. 11 – 10 KW Generators Each generator has the capacity to power fuel pumps and small structures and equipment. 10 Generator Trailers To assist in the mobilization of generators in a state of emergency. The equipment will be maintained and serviced by Belmar’s on staff Mechanic and made available for loan to neighboring municipalities when not in service in the Borough. The equipment and vehicles were free to the Borough of Belmar however staff time and transportation costs were incurred to secure the vehicles.
