Below is a statement from ENT at St. Louis Childrens Hospital regarding the diagnosis of posterior tongue tie. Many patients in this area are receiving this diagnosis and undergoing needless surgery. Please talk with your pediatrician if another provider gives your child the diagnosis or posterior tongue tie and recommends surgery. Washington University, Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Pediatrics: Position on Posterior Tongue-tie o The diagnosis of posterior tongue-tie has not been widely accepted. We believe many normal patients without swallowing or speech concerns would qualify for posterior tongue-tie as it is currently being described. o If posterior tongue-tie is suggested as a causative factor for feeding difficulties, we recommend a comprehensive feeding evaluation. Patients with feeding or swallowing difficulty may have other issues unrelated to the tongue. o Surgery for posterior tongue-tie to improve swallowing or feeding has not been demonstrated to be effective.
