Below is something I shared with the students at #Ilmsummit and Ill share it here too but I hope no-one gets offended or takes it personally. If you see/read/learn something you like from - or visit/meet/study with - a teacher or scholar, dont fawn over them and lose your mind and act like a fanboy or fangirl. Seriously. Maintain your self-respect and dignity. You are in the presence of Muslim who just sins different to you. By putting them on a celebrity pedestal, and not treating them like an equal, you debase yourself and you will be forgotten in a blink of an eye. You just become another face, another like, another faded memory. And then, gone. No respect, no love, no value. Frankly, I cant remember a single person like that, and neither do I care much for them. But I *do* remember fondly most of the folks who talk to me, argue with me, criticise me and treat me as their brother and sister and not something more than just AE, regardless of the adab and respect one shows to a teacher. Just some advice folks after I see more and more the disastrous consequences of celebrity dawah, cheerleading and fangirlism which we are all guilty of intentionally/unintentionally perpetuating, may Allah protect us all. Ameen.
