This is one of the saddest stories, and being a firefighter… one of the worst things I can possibly imagine! Chaam is a village in the Netherlands, it is in the Dutch province of North Brabant. Chaam is a small community and has only 18 volunteer firefighters. Captain Willeke Geerts is one of them. Last Friday a double fatality automobile accident occurred with one of the cars bursting into flames. Two young women were killed when the car they were riding in was hit by a drunk driver and caught fire. This was on a busy road and was witnessed by many. The drunk driver was practically unscathed. He was arrested on scene. This all would be extremely tragic in-and-of itself, yet the hardest part… is that one of the girl’s mothers was on-duty Captain Geerts. She responded to this call, helped put the fire out and then coordinated subsequent clean-up efforts. Only when she and her crew got back to the firehouse did she learn that one of the girls killed in the car crash was her daughter.
