Beneath the Surface Friday 5-6pm on KPFK 90.7FM, streaming live and archived at kpfk.org Today at 5PM Pacific: Robin Kelley, Alex Vitale on police killings, grand juries, & war on the Black and Brown underclass; Au Loong Yu on Hong Kongs Occupy Central protest movement “We Can’t Breathe.” Robin Kelley, Gary Nash Professor of history at UCLA and author of Africa Speaks, America Answers: Modern Jazz in Revolutionary Times (2012) and contributor to Killing Trayvons: an Anthology of American Violence joins us for the bigger picture on the emerging resistance in Black and Brown communities to the over-policing, repression and violence they face: we’ll ask Robin if police violence is accelerating or is it just more of the same being recorded more. His piece in Counterpunch last week “Why We Won’t Wait,” eloquently addresses the issue. Alex Vitale, a specialist on policing from Brooklyn college, who wrote on Al Jazeera after Ferguson that it is practically impossible for a Grand Jury to indict a cop and last night a posted a piece in the Nation saying “We Don’t Just Need Nicer Cops. We Need Fewer Cops.” Continuing on the theme of protests we turn to Hong Kong where the Occupy Central people’s democracy movement has been protesting (and occupying) since September. We talk to Hong Kong activist and author Au Loong Yu to get the background and significance of this movement. Au Loong Yu is currently editor of China Labor Net and also has a column in Inmedia.
