Benefits Street is Tory propaganda its worst (or best depending on - TopicsExpress

Benefits Street is Tory propaganda its worst (or best depending on which side of the fence you are on). The true facts never seem to come to light in the mainstream press. Such as only 0.27% of the total Welfare Bill is spent on unemployed people. Most goes to pensioners and over 20% to people who are actually in work. However because wages in this country are so low for so many, who despite working 40 hours a week, cant afford to pay for basic necessities like rent, rates, utility bills and food, their wages need to be topped up by the government (taxpayer-us). The reason privates rents are so high is because of a shortage of affordable social housing because the Tories failed to build enough council houses to replace the ones they sold off in the 80`s even though the population was increasing all the time. So landlords like this one made a fortune exploiting low paid or unemployed people who couldnt afford to buy their own house by buying up as many houses as possible and in most cases charging DOUBLE the council rent for a similar property and getting the government (or us the taxpayers) to subsidise the extra amount or pay all of it. And the Tories and even B Liar allowed this to carry on and encouraged the housing bubble to swell their coffers as many owned more than one home and as house prices increased fewer and fewer ordinary people could afford their own home and because of the lack of social housing fell victims to greedy landlords. As for Channel 4 and their portrayal of unemployed people which gives much ammunition to the Tory Party`s claim that they are all scroungers, their Chairman is Lord Burns who, In 1980, was appointed Chief Economic Advisor to the Treasury and Head of the Government Economic Service. In 1991 he became Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, a post he held until 1998, when he was appointed a life peer. Note these appointments were made when the Conservative Party was in office!
