Benitez blasts Mourinho over UCL record with Real Madrid Napoli manager, Rafa Benitez has branded Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho a failure following the Portuguese inability to win the Champions League during his stay at Real Madrid and his first stint with Chelsea. Benitez and Mourinho were certainly not the best of friends when both men were managers of Liverpool and Chelsea respectively as matches between the two sides were usually tense due to altercation between the managers before matches. The tension only grew stronger after Liverpool eliminated Chelsea from the Champion League on their way to claiming the title in 2005. “Mourinho talks a lot about many people but I prefer to talk about facts. Mainly that Liverpool eliminated Chelsea from the Champions League with a team with half the budget than theirs,” Benitez told Marca. The former Valencia boss also hinted that Mourinho needs a vast amount of money before he can succeed, but went further to stress that despite the huge resources and the expensively assembled team available to him at Real Madrid, the Portuguese was still unable to make an impact in Europe. “He had an extremely strong and expensive Real Madrid and left the club without winning the Champions League. In three years at Madrid he did nothing in Europe. Maybe if Mourinho sells Eden Hazard and Oscar for €360m to build another team, he will succeed in something,” he concluded.
