Benson Ora sent this to me and i feel i should share it.. What a delight to experience a truly responsive and participatory democracy that works for the citizen. Next week the British government will roll out Clares Law in memory of Clare Brown, a young lady who was murdered in 2009 by her lover whose record of spousal abuse Clare did not know about. Since her death Clares father Michael Brown had waged a single-handed campaign for legislation that would allow women to request background checks on partners who may have a record of violence against women, and thus save other women from the fate that befell his daughter. A listening government complied and that law was named in memory of Clare Brown. Just a few weeks ago, motorists who use a particular road in Kent, Southern England, complained to their MP, Mr Gordon Henderson, about the delays that occur at a particular junction during the morning rush hour when workers and parents on school runs hit the road. Mr Henderson promptly intervened and got the local authority to re-set the traffic lights at the offending junction; the bottle neck promptly eased. Democracy is not merely about conducting free and fair elections.
