Best Platformer Nominees: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U), Little Big Planet 3 (PS3 / PS4), Rayman Legends (PS4 / XOne) Winner: Little Big Planet 3 Rayman Legends for the Wii U (released in 2013) was my choice for platforming game of the year in 2013 due to its excellent use of the gamepad, solid platforming mechanics, beautiful art direction, genius music based levels, great cooperative play, and fun boss battles. Unfortunately, its next-gen counterparts (released early in 2014) simply couldnt quite make up for the loss of the Wii Us gamepad functionality. Rayman Legends for the PS4 and Xbox One are both great games in their own right but are not the ultimate version of the game which knocks it down just enough to pave way for a new king of 2014... Little Big Planet 3. LBP 3 is the most charming and endearing game of 2014. The introduction of new characters (Oddsock, Toggle, and Swoop) is refreshing and raises the level of adorableness to RIDICULOUS heights. Combine this with fun gameplay, great music, vibrant visuals, and genuinely funny dialogue and you have the recipe for a great game. It can be argued that the best part of LBP 3 is that it is a game that keeps giving. With countless user created levels being uploaded on the daily you can look forward to playing this game for a long time to come. And you might want to try your hand at creating a level or two on your own. It is immensely satisfying and rewarding!
