Beware: Rant is coming! This week I have been in Jxn with my wonderful counselor friends at our annual conference. So at the end of a long Thursday we have were meeting specifically with licensed counselors and speaking on a legislative topic we have been proactively working toward for years. (but it takes TIME.) There was a lady in the meeting that attempted to turn the conversation into her agenda and discredit what so many in MCA have worked so hard for so long to accomplish. Even in the meeting, several tried to redirect her POLITELY but she kept coming back to what SHE had done (even though she had stated she had never been to our meeting to know what we were doing and had done.) As the meeting closed, myself and two friends chose to take the elevator; as we were tired and weary from the day. As the doors closed, on stepped this cute little red head of whom I had spoken. We smiled and spoke, as good Southern ladies would and her response was, Im from California, Im a go getter. WE ALL LAUGHED....It was not until this little red head got off the elevator and was a number of steps away that it hit me how offensive that was...He statement said loud and clear, Californias are gogetters whereas, Mississippians lay around the trailer park waiting for the rest of the world to tell them how and when to react...So since that time I have beat myself up a little for not responding to her. I looked around the rest of the conference for her because I at least wanted to let her know how rude she was. I dont think she had a clue. Outsiders are so used to beating up on Mississippi that I dont think they realize anymore that it is rude. I was born, raised and educated in Mississippi. In the South we are taught to be kind, pleasant. Our state and the south in general has been beat up for so long. I am so very tired of it. The North and very often Californians approach our state and our people with such arrogance; but they continue to come here to live. There are some among us who are very negative about life in the state. Now, I am not rich by any means, BUT, IF I didnt love the place I live in, I could move. I could cross the lines to another state that would better suit my needs or for goodness sakes, I could move to California. I had an opportunity at one point in my life to move to California and I thank God I didnt. Not because everything in California is bad but because I love my life in Ms, in the South. I love that I was raised to be kind and polite and respectful. I love that I was raised to be God fearing and not man fearing. So please, if you dont love or even like my state; please feel free to move on and find a place that more suits you. We welcome you here if you can honor our people, our traditions and our land, but if not, we welcome you to leave. You dont have to BECOME a Mississippian and unfortunately you cant. That right is reserved to those of us that were fortunate to be born here; but you should honor us and it is time in my opinion that we begin to state and require that from you. And by the way, I am proud of my education. I am proud that I was raised that I dont offend you with no knowledge and that I am open enough to know that because things are done differently in other places that they are not always better than what I do right here. So once again, if we cant meet your needs for a good and treasured life right here is the great state of MS, please feel free to leave.
