Beware of IRS Telephone Scam -- If you are a regular follower of our page then you know from time to time we pass along information on various scams that continue to circulate whether it be the IRS scam, Lotto, Sweepstakes, Mystery Shopper, “Grandparent” scam, etc. Unfortunately we hear all too often from victims of these scams who did not realize the scam until after they parted ways with their hard-earned dollars to these ruthless crooks. We wanted to let everyone know that the IRS phone scam appears to once again be very active in our area. Just this morning alone we have received 4 phone calls from community members who have received phone calls from the “IRS” stating they owed money. Typically the caller/scammers claim the individual owes taxes and immediate payment (typically via wire or pre-paid credit card) is required or the authorities will come over to arrest the individual for non-payment. If you receive such a call hang up and do not provide any personal information to these individuals. If you have caller ID the scammers may also be “spoofing” a number to have it appear as though the call is coming from Washington DC. Additionally, the IRS will always send taxpayers a written notification of any tax due via the U.S. mail. The IRS never asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the telephone. We encourage you to visit the link included with this post for more information.
