Beware of a new VIRUS! You may have already seen this on TV, the holiday seasons new malware or ransomware is a real nasty one! You HAVE to avoid getting it, or be doing individual off site backups of your photos and documents, to protect your files and documents. The virus uses a server over the internet to encrypt and decrypt your files which locks them up and makes them inaccessible to you. A sync backup wont work unless there is redundancy built in. Carbonite and Dropbox both have redundancy. Overwriting the same backup every day will just move the locked files into the backup, hence the need for redundancy of some form. If you get the viurs on your computer, the faster you can catch it, the less time it has to lock your documents up so you will want to first unplug or disable the internet or shutdown your computer; disabling the net as soon as possible is vital. Its easy to remove the infection, but impossible at this time to unlock any infected files. The best thing you can do is avoid getting the virus altogether, it works like many familiar exploits that come as file attachments via email: This infection is typically spread through emails sent to company email addresses that pretend to be customer support related issues from Fedex, UPS, DHS, etc. These emails would contain a zip attachment that when opened would infect the computer. These zip files contain executables that are disguised as PDF files as they have a PDF icon and are typically named something like FORM_101513.exe or FORM_101513.pdf.exe. Since Microsoft does not show extensions by default, they look like normal PDF files and people open them.
