May 9, 2014 The police arrested 10 other demonstrators, also mistreating them as they took them to the Port-au-Prince police station, where they got a government commissioner and a justice of the peace (juge de paix) to hear them before shutting them in the National Penitentiary. In addition to condemning Martelly’s decree setting the minimum wage at 225 gourdes, the workers denounced how factory bosses are squeezing them. When they say they will give an assembly worker enough pieces to make 300 gourdes ($6.66), the worker cannot actually make that amount. Also, workers living in the southern capital neighborhood of Carrefour explained the difficulties they face. A round-trip tap tap (bus) costs 50 gourdes ($1.11), breakfast and lunch at the factory 75 gourdes each ($3.30 total), and a drink costs 25 gourdes ($0.56). So with a salary of only 225 gourdes ($5), there is nothing left over, especially with the exchange rate at 46 gourdes to a dollar. President Martelly has accepted to protect the bosses’ interests, who are exploiting the workers for peanuts. According to a study by the Institute for Statistics and Information, a family of five should have 425 gourdes ($9.44) each day to eat, while a worker only makes 225 gourdes a day.
