Bhante Y. Wimala is an amazing Buddhist monk with whom I was privileged to spend time with last year. This was his message today. May you find comfort in it, not only for the events in Kenya, but throughout the world. With love, Terry ********************************** Dear Friends and Students, To All My Friends and Students and Specially for those of you who are in Kenya. I wish that I were there in Nairobi with you these days while most of you are going through much anxiety due to the Westgate Mall tragedy. I send my blessings and love to all of you and wish you peace and emotional healing. I also send my love and blessings to everybody who lost their lives or got hurt. I have spoken to many of my friends and students in Nairobi. Many have been badly shaken and emotionally disturbed. There are times that we question our mind’s capacity to deal with such unexpected events and make sense of such cruel and inhumane acts. Yet, my dear friends, each one of us has personal responsibility to guard our minds and prevent the mind drifting into dark and painful states when we get shaken by unexpected disasters. Clearly, we have no control of what is happening out there in the world. But we always have control of what is happening within us, in our minds, with our thoughts, emotions and feelings. If you are emotionally disturbed, lost or confused, find a way to guide the mind into a place of peace and quietness. Disturbed emotions can cause a lot of physical stress so try your best to relax your body and rest well. Look at your state of mind and see whether you are obsessed with sad or fearful feelings. Do not allow such obsessive thoughts to exaggerate the dangers and disturb you. It is a good time to take time to watch and observe what is happening in your own mind. Try to replace the thoughts of fear, anger or sadness with thoughts of courage, self-confidence and peace. Your mind will give space to what you choose to think and feel. First try to calm your emotions and relax your body and remember to guide your mind to choosing peace. Take a few minutes a day to sit still and let the mind be restful. Take time to meditate and self reflect. Think how easily and unexpectedly life can end. Try extra hard to create a loving environment at home and be close to your loved ones. Remember, the peaceful garden and the quiet and sacred space in the shrine room of the Nairobi Buddhist Temple is always waiting to offer you a fresh breeze of nurturing energy. So you can go there to meditate, clear your mind and be at peace with yourself. May you be blessed with inner peace and wisdom. My there be peace, love and harmony in this world. Bhante Y. Wimala
