Biblical miracles Miracles, as defined as those actions done by God through human agency that are manifestly beyond human and/or natural ability, no longer exist. That is a confident statement not from my experience or lack of belief in the supernatural or the power of God. It is a statement based on the clear teachings of scripture. We can know they no longer exist because of three clear teachings. 1. The method of transmission no longer exists, ie through the laying on of the apostles hands. Act 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Act 8:18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles hands the Holy Ghost was given ... 2. The purpose of miracles has been fulfilled, ie to reveal and confirm the word. a. Reveal the word Eph 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Eph 3:4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Eph 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; Fullfilled Jud 1:3 ... earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. b. Confirm the word Mar 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Fulfilled Heb_2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; Gal_3:15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a mans covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. 3. Miracles were prophesied to end when the revelation process was completed. 1Co 13:8 Love never fails. Now if there are prophecies, they will be done away with. If there are tongues, they will cease. If there is knowledge, it will be done away with. 1Co 13:9 For what we know is incomplete and what we prophesy is incomplete. 1Co 13:10 But when what is complete comes, then what is incomplete will be done away with. Jud 1:3 ... earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tongues were a miraculous gift that has been done away, as have all miraculous gifts. They were prophesied to end when their function was completed(1). That function was completed when revelation was completed. Their purpose was to reveal and confirm the revelation of God(2). Revelation has been completed(3). It has been confirmed (4) and need never be confirmed again, nor can be added to(5). We no longer have the method of transmission of miraculous gifts, the laying on of the apostles hands. (6) (1) (BBE)1Co 13:8 Though the prophets word may come to an end, tongues come to nothing, and knowledge have no more value, love has no end. 1Co 13:9 For our knowledge is only in part, and the prophets word gives only a part of what is true: 1Co 13:10 But when that which is complete is come, then that which is in part will be no longer necessary. (2) (KJV) Mar 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. (3) Jud 1:3 ... earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. (4) Heb_2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; (5) Gal_3:15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a mans covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. (6) Act 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Act 8:18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Rom_1:11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; Act 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 2Ti 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
