Biblically stupid: An upstate New York pastor is planning to give away an AR-15 assault rifle as a raffle prize at an upcoming Sunday church service. The Rev. John Koletas, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Troy, even rolled out a provocative flyer advertising the high-powered giveaway. “...My peace I give unto you...John 14:27,” blares the flier, which includes a photo of the deadly weapon. “Does the Bible defend my right to bear arms?” it adds. The explosive advert notes that the March 23 raffle is free and a “qualified attendee will receive a NY legally modified AR-15.” To be as fair as I can be, the winner will go through an extensive FBI background check and the gun has been modified to be compliant with NYS law. In all my years behind (and sitting at) the bar- there is one rule that Ive learned can never be broken: you don’t talk about politics, guns, or religion. Whenever someone starts talking about those subjects? A fight (either verbal or physical) almost always breaks out. Why is this? Well, because people are passionate about it and they will defend their beliefs to levels that border on lunacy. This stunt by Rev. Koletas is the equivalent to shoving a stick into a hornets nest…and he seems fine with it. Of course, politicians wont let this event go by without jumping in. GOP Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin has agreed to speak to the congregation (what ever happened to the separation of church and state???) where he will “honor hunters and gun owners who have been so viciously attacked by the antichristian socialist media and antichristian socialist politicians the last few years,” according to a letter on his website. The pastor, who has seven arrests under his belt for disorderly conduct, claims this hunting rifle is in line with the right to bear arms and believes its the right thing to do. So, just so Im clear on this, the service will consist of preaching by both the Rev and the assemblyman who will spit fire about the govenor and the antichristian socialist media and antichristian socialist politicians. After, they will give away an assault rifle…what could possibly go wrong with that scenario?? Ill admit that two things that scare me the most in life are religion and guns. That isnt to say that people shouldnt have either but there are some that become quite dangerous when they wield a gun or a bible. So on Sunday, March 23rd some lucky Baptist will be the new owner of a free AR-15 assault rifle. God bless America!
