Big Buckhead Baptist Church, located near Millen GA about halfway between Augusta and Savannah, is one of the most historic Baptist churches in the state, indeed the nation. It was here that a decision was made by Baptist leaders to begin a college that is today known as Mercer University. And on November 28, 1864, a large cavalry battle was fought between Major General Joe Wheelers Confederates and the Union cavalry accompanying Shermans army on its March to the Sea. Unfortunately there is no longer an active congregation at Big Buckhead, although the local historical society cares for the property and holds a sunrise service there each Easter. And soon a new Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails interpretive marker will detail the history of Big Buckhead from its founding in 1774 through the Battle of Big Buckhead Church. :-)
