Big Fish (2003) A good alternate title for this movie would be Tim Burton goes fishing for an Oscar. On a technical level this is one of Tim Burtons better movies, however it is also one of his least memorable. While Ed Wood is perhaps his least known movies at least the people who’ve seen it remember it well, this one even people who’ve seen it barely remember it. And that’s a shame because it’s actually a not a bad movie. The movie focuses on the life and tall tales of Ed Bloom played by Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney, and his son’s attempt to reconcile his relationship and figure out fact from fiction about his father’s life before he succumbs to cancer. How deep you look into this movie depends on your personal relationship with your father. I never had or desired a lovey-dovey relationship with my father so many moments I’ve been told are tear-jerkers have absolutely no effect on me. If you have or want that type of relationship you’ll probably really like this movie. I can understand the son’s frustrations but geez guy, get some real problems. On his search he finds that then lines between fact and fiction are even more blurred than he thought. He reconciles that while not all the details of his father’s stories are true they are true to the spirit of who is father was, essentially a big fish and while it’s not as grand as he tells it he still lived a grand life. The film is definitely one to please critics as with its writing, characters, and directing are very well crafted, however sometimes something that is just technically good isn’t always memorable. It doesn’t really feel like a Tim Burton movie as it lacks many of the recurring tropes we associate with him. You’ll like it as you’re watching it, but you won’t remember it long after. What was I talking about again?
