Big Government: Rampant Obama administration incompetence leads Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., to advocate strong and effective government. Its a rehashed version of communism has never really been tried. For decades, Washingtonians have quipped that the most dangerous place to be is between Chuck Schumer and a TV camera; many believe the senior New York senator fervently wishes to become the first Jewish president. So its no surprise that Schumer was willing to rattle fellow Democrats by arguing on Wednesday that the unpopular ObamaCare was a mistake. His political calculus is right on the money, letting all know that he is independent of Obama and his sinking ship, top congressional Democrats Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, and all-but-certain 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Democrats unwisely used their control of Congress and the presidency in 2009 and 2010 to put all of our focus on the wrong problem — health care reform, Schumer argued, i.e. a government expansion for the lower-income uninsured instead of the middle class. Funny. As we recall, there was a prominent trillion-dollar middle-class jobs program called the Obama fiscal stimulus that was the first thing on the new presidents agenda. Schumer himself waxed poetic about it, declaring in February 2009, In the dark cloud looming over our economy, this package is a silver lining. It was a massive Keynesian spending package guaranteed to bring unemployment below 6% by 2012, courtesy of what the president called shovel-ready projects all across the country. But today, the best Schumer can do is refer to the partial success of the stimulus, arguing that it should have been built on with other big-government schemes because Americans were crying out for an end to the recession, for better wages and more jobs — not for changes in their health care. Schumer conveniently ignores the false promise that ObamaCare would mean no changes to your health care — If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. According to Schumer, Democrats lost in 2014 because the government made mistakes that eroded the electorates confidence in its ability to improve the lives of those in the middle class, like the ObamaCare website disaster and botched medical care of veterans. But then he says Democrats must convince people that government can work and help restore the middle class to prosperity. Sure, and the Soviet Union could have worked if smarter people had been in charge. Obama convinced millions of voters he was that smart. If people dont believe government can deliver, theyll follow the Republican path, Schumer warned. Exactly, Senator Schumer. As Ronald Reagan said, Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.
