Bihu Dance Sparks Controversy Assam: The Bihu dance presented in Bollywood style at a fashion show organized by the Rudraksha Trade Private Limited, a company based outside the State, at the Brahmaputra Ashok hotel on Wednesday evening triggered a controversy all over in Assam. It may be mentioned that Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu was present at the event. State Cultural Affairs Department Commissioner Swapnanil Baruah also took part in the event. The All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) demanded legal action against Swapnanil Baruah for directly or indirectly ‘encouraging’ the organizer of the event to present Bihu dance in a distorted manner. The ATASU has also demanded dismissal of Baruah for hurting the sentiments of the Assamese people. Samujjal Bhattacharyya, advisor, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has also demanded a public apology from the organizer of the event. Other organizations like the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chattra Parishad (AJYCP), the Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) and the Asom Unnayan Parishad (AUP) have also condemned the distorted presentation of Bihu dance and demanded public apology from the organizer of the show.
