Bill Maher, I went to the most liberal school on earth, a UC in fact, and my education makes it very clear to me that you are not only wrong, but being just as hypocritical as you claim the CAL kids are: The problem is he makes statements that make him come off as a bigot. He may not be (which is hard to believe based on his documentary and how he has spoken about ALL religion throughout the years), but he espouses the kind of rhetoric that people associate with bigotry. There will be Muslim students who may feel alienated with his presence there and cannot condone it. Just as you cant have an ardently anti-gay or anti-black comic speaking to a graduating university class you cant have a vehement anti-religion (but particularly anti-Islam) comic speak and not alienate people. The issue is not him as a comic, he can make any jokes he wants, The issue is that he makes very serious statements (that he truly believes) on his show and other forums that are deeply biased and anti-religion, especially toward one religion in particular. Just as he wants the CAL kids to learn about free speech, he needs to learn that hateful free speech has its consequences. He could not make the same statements about Judaism (though he could to an extent about Christianity) and have people in the audience cheering and laughing along with his diatribe. Bill Maher wants to have it both ways.
