This is why we need to be vigilant and hold UTLA accountable. Why for example, werent they pushing for a salary demand as our central focus at these rallies? Why did UTLA unilaterally lower the salary demand from 17.6% retroactive to 2013-14 to 10% for this year only, in violation of UTLA policy? Have any backroom deals been struck, like they did in Chicago? First of all I have to say that regret my involvement with the CORE caucus. CORE is a group of young White predominately Jewish socialist. I say that only to say that there was an inner clique that consisted of 90% of the leadership being of Jewish descent. Many are beginning teachers who have worked less than 5 years as a teachers. Several African Americans on their team are older like the Recording Secretary Who was 55 with 3 years of teaching. In other words veteran teachers were completely left out and not considered for any leadership roles of significance. Lewis was the one with seniority. These novice teachers with no experience and no understanding of the union reduced the previous union attorneys workload and hired the mother of the Newly appointed Chief of staff and Co Founder of CORE to become the union attorney even though she was not a trained unioist. Every single lawsuit filed by her was botched or lost for the first 3 years. Then to add insult to injury, Karen Lewis and her team decided to punish legislators and refused to back them. This opened the door for Jonas Edelman to co opt the legislators moving to create the union busting bill. Senate Bill 7. Lewis went to a Springfield without the knowledge and permission of her House of Delegates and secretly signed the bill that gutted the union of any ability to defend its members. Teachers were forced to work the Longer School Day with no pay. Adding about 2 extra primarialy babysitting hours to the day. Seniority in economic layoffs were given up. Complete power was given to principals while teachers were stripped of their due process rights and a consecutive 2 year unsatisfactory ration ended in job termination. Not to mention the right to strike which was changed from 51% of the voting members to 75% of the total union membership. Lewis also gave up the Right To Strike for anything but money. Then after even the young CORE organizers realized how devastating the bill was, they scrambled to amend it so that now its not as bad as it was. If you can believe that originally if was 50% worse. Then to save their own behinds, they called a strike knowing that teachers would lose all but they would gain publicity to save their reputation after gutting the union. Cont Im on my phone so please excuse typos. I helped to organize Lewis s campaign in 2009. I was hired at the CTU but was hired against the will of Lewis who constantly confronted me about running against her. Which I had no desire to do. I formed CAUSE, Coalition and Alliance Of Urban School Educators . To address the mass terminations nationwide of over 100,000 African American teachers. The CTU put the weight of their entire organization to destroy CAUSE to silence fired teachers who were no longer union members. Lewis I believe was told by the AFT to look the other way while inner city Black veteran teachers were fired. THE DEAL WAS THAT AFTER 5 YEARS THE UNIONS WOULD ORGANIZE CHARTERS TO RECOUP MEMBERS AND DUES. ALSO THE CORE caucus are not educators. They are socialist communist organizers wanting to run for political office to over throw the status quo. Also the Lewis won with 27% OF THE TEACHER VOTE after forcing a runoff. She lost 90% of the Black a elementary schools, ironically the first to be closed after SB7.
