Biological Hazard in New Zealand on Friday, 27 June, 2014 South Island, Ngapara, North Otago Unidentified death (sheep) The motive behind the slaughter of close to 200 sheep on a North Otago farm remains a mystery. A 25 hectare paddock on Peter Stackhouses 260ha Ngapara farm, which he owns with wife, Janine, resembled a war zone on Saturday morning after he discovered 111 sheep, both ewes and hoggets, had been killed overnight on Friday. He came across another 80 dead sheep on Sunday morning, while conducting a routine feed. Oamaru Police are continuing their inquiries and have spend the past few days working to piece together what has occurred. This appears to be an act of wanton destruction with no obvious motive, Detective Warren Duncan, of Oamaru, said. Our scene examination has ruled out that the sheep have been attacked by dogs but we are still working to determine the specific circumstances. This is an unusual event because so many sheep were killed and there is no evidence that any of them were intended to be stolen or slaughtered for meat, he said. Duncan said police have received some good information from members of the public, which was being followed up. However, we are still keen to hear from anyone who has any information that might help us solve this case.
