Bird Estimate - Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge Sandhill Cranes – 5,000 (Lesser and Greater Sandhill Cranes) Light Geese– 33,110 (Snow and Ross’s geese) Canada Geese – 186 Ducks – 55,524 Water & Shorebirds – 2,914 (Coots and other birds not included in the above categories) Raptors - 28 (Hawks, Falcons, Eagles, Owls, etc…) Date of Last Survey – 11-13-14 The biology staff at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge periodically conduct scientific surveys to estimate the numbers of certain bird species that overwinter on the refuge. We use these numbers to determine how to manage the habitat for the greatest benefit to the birds.
