Birdman or (The unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance) Riggan Thompson (Michael Keaton) used to be a box office smash, his character Birdman, was a a big screen Superhero who pulled in the punters and lined the pockets of all involved. That was 20 years ago, now Riggan is trying to prove to himself and the rest of the world that he is not just a celebrity who can read lines from an autocue, but an an artist who can write, direct, produce and star in a credible Broadway play. As Riggan struggles with all of the usual problems that would beset a large production on Broadway, he also has to deal with highly emotive family issues, strained relationships, personal and professional and the demon of his former stardom, that just wont let him get on. Intense performances all round is what you get from Birdman, even from the main contributor with regards to the soundtrack! Believe me, if you cant get along with Jazz drumming, youre going to struggle with this film! Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifianakis all give top notch turns as sterotypically highly strung artistes. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu directs Birdman, and his cinematography style ensures that we get to see every facial nuance that the actors can produce as the screen is filled with talking heads on a regular basis. Birdman isnt an easy watch, and at times as well as being an attack on the senses, it tests your ability to stay with more than one version of a story at the same time.
