“Birth of the Cool” is considered a major landmark in the development of jazz Conceived by Miles Davis and Gil Evans it was a departure from the frenetic pace and complex variations of bebop which had taken the jazz world by storm a decade earlier when Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie hit the scene. The sound was polyphonic and ensemble based .The band was a nonet comprising alto and baritone sax, trumpet, trombone and tuba with no tenor akin to a classical music format but with a jazz rhythm section This album effectively launched both Miles and Gil Evans up into the jazz firmament Listen to this entire compilation this Sunday afternoon
