Birthday Vacation Part 4. Ios, the island with the beautiful beaches and churches. This island with its population of about 2000 explodes to 40,000 during the summer months. We took the ferry from Santorini to go visit our friends from Campbell River who built a beautiful new house on Ios, the island they grew up on. After a warm welcome they took us to the old town and then we climbed to the top of the island. Because our friends are so liked on the island we were welcomed by the ladies who light the candles in the little family churches and were allowed to go inside and given some of the history. In total there are 365 churches on this small island. Next day we rented a car to tour the island, with our first stop being a climb to Homers tomb. The goats didnt seem to mind our presence on the road and we were quite patient, after all some of the best cheese Ive ever eaten is produced on this island and the local yogurt is absolutely wonderful with the local honey.That night a cold wind blew in but that didnt dampen our spirits.
