Birthday dinner for Gary last night at Daniel in NYC, a Michelin 3-star experience. After the complimentary champagne and the 5 or 6 amuse bouches (oysters, razor clams, scallop ceviche, sea urchin, etc. etc.), I had the quail/foie gras terrine with pickled baby shiitakes and the red snapper with crispy polenta and roasted fennel. Birthday boy had the crayfish with asparagus and Iberico ham, then the monkfish wrapped in chorizo and stuffed with lobster. Everything topped with amazing sauces. My main dessert: a melt-in-your-mouth coffee/chocolate concoction, but the desserts kept coming--buttery orange madeleines; teeny tiny dark chocolates with almond, apricot, lemoncello or raspberry filling; a plate of miniature cookies and pastries. A once-in-a-lifetime meal that I hope will be repeated more than once in my lifetime.
