Birthday poem for Max and Leo’s 16th *************************** As we approach your 16th birthday my darlings, I would like to ponder these last wonderful years of life shared with you, During which I have never felt alone. At first there were constant demands for ‘booby juice’ that kept me on my toes. Then, as you grew, I was rewarded by podgy little arms (yes all 4 of them) slung around my neck As you clambered all over me like a climbing frame, covering me with slobbery, sticky kisses. There was always plenty of noise to remind me of your presence And boys’ boisterousness and laughs and games and fun were shared. But there were tears and illness and hard times too. And always your little calls of demand although voiced now instead of screamed. ‘Come Mummy,’ ‘Look Mummy,’ ‘I’m hungry Mummy’ ‘Mummy, I want…’ And now those same arms are long and gangly and slender, strong as oak saplings And still you wrap them around my neck But I have to strain to reach up to you when we embrace, as we still do. We continue to laugh and play and joke and dance and visualize things together And share the depth of love that is so unique between mothers and sons. My name, which of course has been abbreviated for coolness sake to ‘mum’ Still rings out plaintively. ‘Mum, when’s dinner?’ ‘Mum, where are my socks?’ ‘Mum, can you sign my detention?’ ‘Mum, can you buy me…?’ I’m so proud of the young men you have grown into. Thanks for being you, My precious rocks of solid love. Happy birthday guys! After this disastrous weekend spent with your father, tonight we are going to celebrate in style! Love you more than you know.
