Birthday remembrance to Edwin Starr (January 21, 1942 – April 2, 2003). He was born Charles Edwin Hatcher in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1942. He first recorded for the small record label Ric-Tic, and later for Motown Records after the latter absorbed Ric-Tic in 1968. Agent DoubleOSoul was his first release which charted at, UK #8, US #21, hit in 1965, followed by, Back Street, Stop Her On Sight (S.O.S.) US hit in 1966, Headline News, I Want My Baby Back, in 1968 the reissue of Stop Her On Sight (S.O.S.) / Headline News as a double a side made it to #11 in the UK charts, also in 1968, Twenty-Five Miles scored in both the US & UK, he made a Disco version of 25 Miles later. The biggest hit of his career, was the Vietnam War protest song War which climbed to #3 in the UK & #1 in the US, the song was co written & produced by Norman Whitfield. Stop The War Now was the 1970 follow up, then came, Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On a US R&B/Soul #6 hit in 1971. There You Go in 1973 & many others. Edwin Starr reappeared on the charts with a pair of disco hits, (Eye-to-Eye) Contact and H.A.P.P.Y. Radio. Contact was the more successful of the two, peaking at #65 on the US pop charts, #13 on the R&B/Soul chart, #1 on the Disco chart, and #6 on the UK Singles Chart, Happy Radio made it to #9 in the UK. He continued to tour mostly the UK & Europe where we had adopted him. I was lucky to have been invited to the Roundhouse recording studio in Camdem, London, as a thank you, as i had made him a warm up tape for his shows, that he rang & requested. He was a fun man with such a great voice & loved what he did. On April 2, 2003, at the age of 61,Edwin Starr suffered a heart attack and died while taking a bath at his home in Nottingham. R.I.P Edwin you will always be missed. GARY
