Bismillah. Yesterday, I sat down with our OT, discussing about Individual Education Plan for each student in our MyCP-ALIF class. Wow, what a revelation.... Though we know how important school is for kids, yesterday we discovered how crucial education is to the development of children with cerebral palsy. One of the activities that we laid out was toilet training. We discussed about task analyses.. and how to incorporate training for individual task that make using the toilet possible, as well as how to assess achievement for a particular task. I said to her, you see... OT plays a crucial role here, that is why we need OTs in school. She nodded in agreement. Later, I left our OT with a mind-boggling task analysis for toilet training, walking with walker, handwriting skills etc etc... Although OT learn about task analyses, how many actually know how to do it without relying our a standardised evaluation form or actually carried out training based on the individual skills. But I definitely believe she can do it. I can see her eureka moment while we were discussing about these issues. I pray to Allah that He will help us in uncovering ways to assist these kids in education. As Assoc. Prof Dr Hasnah Toran will always say, teaching kids with disabilities is not rocket science. There are so many things to explore, ... what a great way start to a new year. May Allah create us a clear path, free from harm ...and ease our journey in making changes for a better future for children with disabilities. Ameen.
