Bit #2 THE BAY-LAKE JUMBLE: in most cases proper names, denoting bodies of water are used with a definite article. Some noteworthy exceptions: lakes, if the word Lake precedes the name (e.g., Lake Erie, but THE Great Salt Lake; Lake Baikal / the Baikal -- although a certain source deems Baikal with the zero article as acceptable: usefulenglish.ru/grammar/part-7-articles-with-geographical-names. What is interesting and confusing at once is that nearly the opposite is true for bay names: Bloch / Goldman insist that no article should be used with names of bays (Hudson Bay, Kamchatka, etc., but they fail to mention, that if the word Bay is followed by the preposition of and the rest of the name -- then the definite article is used: the Bay of Bengal, the Bay of Gibraltar -- but Gibraltar Bay (no article), humph!
