Bit of a deep rant for a Monday, but for anyone who has the time - TopicsExpress

Bit of a deep rant for a Monday, but for anyone who has the time feel free to contribute a comment! I was just watching a music vid with Whitney Houston, and recently I watched a movie with Phillip Seymour-Hoffman... It really got me thinking: to so many young people, these stars seemingly have everything that our youth strive for: fame, talent, money, glamorous relationships (in some cases) - yet even these celebs struggle with the pressures of life and therefore succumb to demons like addiction and depression. In some ways, the media (and the materialist society we exist in) has set up our kids for failure. On one hand it makes them WANT all these fake success-markers, but on the other hand continues to prove that these dont actually bring happiness. Is the problem that the fame etc aggravates the pressures on mental health? If so, are we doing enough to teach this lesson? Are we also missing the chance, from a young enough age, to be explaining that every worldly possession could never replace things that cannot be bought: health, family, loved ones, a trusting handshake, a warm kiss, reciprocated lustful passion etc. If kids really understood this, would they still continue to seek wealth and fame? In cultures where wealth is such a distant and foreign hope, the children seem happier with their meager possessions and more appreciative of things like family. I feel like its our job, in this generation, to try and bring some of those lessons to our kids. We spent so long hearing how in Australia you can have anything you want without spending time qualifying the anything - and now it seems like too many people are going after things which are counterproductive. OK I think thats all. If anyone got to the end, please tell me what u think lol Otherwise Ill just go back to my armchair philosophising. Happy Monday! xx
