Bit of misinformation from Dorset County Council yesterday. In response to an article criticising them for being slipshod and shoddy, they told the Echo that the steps to the beach were removed for safety reasons after they were damaged in last winter’s storms. There are two things wrong with this statement: 1 The steps didnt exist during last winters storms - they were removed in Spring 2013. 2 The steps werent damaged when they were removed - they were in good condition. And they werent taken out because they were faulty - they were removed to discourage people from using the footpath. Im attaching four photos taken after the landslip, just before the steps were removed. Most pics show cracks in the ground, but there is one of the steps. People who have used the steps over twenty years will agree that they were in pretty good nick before they were removed - they have been in a much worse state at times, and were still regularly used by the public. Im surprised that Dorset County Council didnt realise this when they made their misleading statement to the Echo. The photographs here were supplied to us by... Dorset County Council.
