Bitesize intro folks to the Heavyweights of this Ummah! Yusuf Ibn AbdilBarr al-Qurtubi! Born and raised in Al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) during the 4-5th century (H). He bacame one of the most prominent scholars of his age. He authored many unprecedented masterpieces including; commentaries upon the Muwatta of Imam Malik Istizhkar, Tamhid a voluminous book on the biographies of the Companions Istiaab, an incredible book on seeking knowledge Jami Bayan al-Ilm in which he condemns blindly following and encourages following based on reason Ittiba, A book for Fatwa within the School of Madinah al-Kaafi & many others. Ibn AbdilBarr is arguably the only scholar commonly known by the kunya Abu Umar. It is said that Ibn AbdilBarr wasnt too keen on Madhabs in his early days and was then won over by the Maliki Madhab, his role thereafter becomes an amazing one within the Madhab contributing significantly and substantially to the Andalusi (Hadithi) sub-school of the Malikiya & authoring many works in Defence of the School. Ironically his best friend was said to be Ibn Hazm, someone who on the contrary after following the Shafi school had abandoned all Madhabs and risen to Independent Ijtihad. Ibn Hazm speaks proudly of his friend in his book on the Merits of Al-Andalus stating: that amongst whom weve personally met of the People of Ijtihad is unquestionably Yusuf ibn AbdilBarr. Ibn AbdilBarr was a Qadi (judge) throughout various places especially Qurtuba, Lashbuna (Lisbon/Portugal) and Xativa (Shatiba) where he eventually died and was buried. His accolade in his time was Hafidh al-Maghrib The Hafidh (in Hadith) of the entire Western Muslim World! ...His counterpart Hafidh al-Mashriq: The Hafidh of The Eastern Muslim World was Al-Khatib alBaghdadi; a legendary Shafi scholar. Interestingly the two Dons and Masters of Hadith of the entire Muslim world, both pass away in the same year 463H, leaving behind a legacy that will immortalise them for all time to come!
