Bjorn Lomberg Obamas science advisor was wrong to suggest that - TopicsExpress

Bjorn Lomberg Obamas science advisor was wrong to suggest that global warming caused the extreme cold in the US last winter. Whod have thought? This was what Dr John Holdren said on January 7, 2014: A growing body of evidence suggests that the kind of extreme cold experienced by the United States is a pattern we can expect to see with increasing frequency as global warming continues. But a new paper in Nature Climate Change says, thats just wrong. The title actually gives it away: Arctic amplification decreases temperature variance in northern mid- to high-latitudes. It finds that Arctic amplification doesnt act to increase the variance so that well more often experience extreme cold, as Holdren claimed, but actually reduce subseasonal temperature variance. You can see Holdrens (incorrect) explanation here: https://youtube/watch?v=5eDTzV6a9F4#t=46 And here is the new paper: nature/nclimate/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nclimate2268.html PS. Holdren earlier wrote in Scientific American about how wrong I was on pretty much all things energy and how we were running out of environment. Not surprisingly, he was pretty wrong about that, too. (see scientificamerican/media/pdf/lomborgrebuttal.pdf). PPS. Holdren was also a participant in the famous bet with Julian Simon where he claimed the world was running out of resources. He lost that bet.
